Kisii funeral drama: Kibagendi explains near-fistfight with MP Nyakundi.
Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi has cleared the air on the chaos that erupted at a Kisii funeral, where he nearly exchanged blows with his Kitutu Chache North counterpart, MP Japheth Nyakundi.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, September 15, 2025, Kibagendi said the tension was triggered after the crowd began chanting “Wantam,” a slogan which admitted that he likely added fuel to the fire by continuing to exaggerate the slogans and that Nyakundi, who was overseeing the event as emcee, reacted aggressively because he did not like Kibagendi’s comments.
“The Member of Parliament there, because he’s a sycophant of the system and the President, did not like it, that I was probably pouring fuel into the fire,” Kibagendi explained.
The MP said Nyakundi attempted to wrestle the microphone from him and physically remove him from the stage. Kibagendi credited his fitness for preventing the emcee from taking control.
“So he tried to grab the mic from me and tried to throw me off stage. And because of my fitness, I managed to stop him,” he said.
Freedom to speak
Despite the tension, Kibagendi insisted the encounter did not escalate into a full-blown fight. He mocked Nyakundi’s physical ability, saying, “We never really got to fight because had we fought, he’s not as fit as I am.”
Kibagendi also defended his right to speak freely at public events, saying Nyakundi could have simply responded verbally instead of resorting to force.
“He was the emcee for the day. He ought to have let me say whatever I was saying and probably have a rejoinder,” he said, adding that Nyakundi’s actions were aimed at impressing higher authorities rather than maintaining order.
The MP concluded by stressing that his comments reflect his usual political stance, not personal vendettas.
“I was saying what I say every day, everywhere. He was uncomfortable with it,” Kibagendi noted, highlighting that public scrutiny often magnifies minor incidents.
